What is home automation, in plain words?
Home automation is one system that controls the things in a house that already have a switch, a motor, a remote or a sensor — light, cooling, blinds, locks, gates, water pumps, media — and runs them on rules, schedules and presence instead of separate apps and remotes.
Do I need to rewire a house to automate it?
No, not for a retrofit. Most work happens in existing switch boxes, at the AC unit, at the curtains and at the hub. New cable is only needed for a full renovation, a wired KNX backbone, or a circuit that cannot carry the load.
Does home automation work without the internet?
A local-first system does. The hub, scenes and automations run inside the home on the local network; the cloud is optional. Switches keep working as switches, and the app works on the home Wi-Fi even when the broadband is down.
Is KNX better than Zigbee or Matter?
They solve different problems. KNX is a wired, multi-vendor building bus: robust, long-lived and best planned at construction. Zigbee and Matter are wireless and retrofit-friendly. A good design often uses both — a wired backbone for the building and wireless for devices that move or were added later.
Can I automate a rented flat?
Yes. Plug-in relays, smart bulbs, battery sensors, a doorbell camera and a small hub come out with you. Anything fixed to a wall needs the landlord’s consent, and the reversal scope should be agreed before work starts.
